I have reinvented my career more than once: emergency physician, CEO, author, keynote speaker, and now healthcare AI. Each time, the people who did best around me started before the change reached them. AI is moving faster than any shift I have seen, so the question is not whether you will reinvent. It is whether you will choose when.
Here is the framework I use, in five pillars.
1. Purpose: your why leads to your what
Without a clear reason, every obstacle looks like a stop sign. Write one sentence about who you want to help and why it matters to you.
2. Plan: anticipate the obstacles
Get your house in order first: savings, time and the people who depend on you. Then write the plan down, including the obstacle most likely to stop you and what you will do about it.
3. People: nobody reinvents alone
You need a mentor who has done it, a sponsor who will open a door, and someone you will teach next. Teaching is how you find out what you actually know.
4. Skills for the AI era
Learn the AI tools in your field before they are required. In medicine, I see the same pattern everywhere: human judgment plus AI beats either one alone. Spend 20 minutes a day using AI on real work, not reading about it.
5. Momentum: act this week, then celebrate
Take one visible step in the next seven days. Then celebrate it. Celebration is not vanity. It is fuel for the next step.
